Mandala Garden

The Mandala garden has been at  Eumundi school for over ten years.  It has been designed and cared for by students from all year levels and is a marvelous place to learn, dream, share and eat!

We have several established orchard trees including many citrus varieties, papaw, guava, five star fruit, tropical apples, jaboticaba , avocado, bananas and mulberry.  On a more seasonal rotation we grow many herbs such as lemongrass, comfrey, parsley, chives, Ceylon spinach and nasturtiums.  Some of the more popular activities include picking the nasturtium flowers and finding the sweet nectar at the back of the flower, picking a fresh passionfruit and squeezing out the fresh flesh.

We have also had many lucky surprises!  Nobody knows where the sweet cherry tomatoes came from and it also remains a mystery how the enormous pumpkin vine appeared.  (That winter we all enjoyed delicious pumpkin soup and tomatoes fresh from the vine.)

The Mandala Club children are also at the front line of many environmental projects that we have started in Eumundi.  At many sites around the school we have specific nesting boxes for possums, parrots and microbats.  With the help of Year 7 children we have established the native vine which attracts the endangered Richmond Birdwing butterfly.  Another area of interest is the Bushtucker Garden which has many endemic species of edible shrubs and herbs.

The school chooks are a very popular part of the Mandala Garden. Apart from providing fresh eggs to the Tuckshop, they are very tame and love to be fussed over.  They are also wonderful waste disposal systems for the tuckshop scraps and provide us with excellent organic fertilizer for the Garden.

The Mandala Garden continues to expand and change every year and certainly fits in to our school motto….While We Live We Grow.
